out of gas
Posted by Michael Demmer under Cambodia, Field Work, General
No, I’m not talking about an issue we had with transportation, but rather electricity… Yes, in Stung Treng, while I was in the middle of writing an email, the power went out in the CIC center because there was no more gas to power the generator. Oh, and despite my valiant attempts, the CIC operator refused to take my money for the time I had spent on the internet (he did take Rachel’s however).
I’m now back in Phnom Penh after a successful (and quick) installation of a server and the network monitoring software in Svay Rieng, a sleepy Cambodian town only miles from the border with Vietnam. Nothing really much to report from the installation, all went smoothly.
One interesting sight (which regrettably I wasn’t fast enough to take a picture of) was a moto loaded up with at least ten plastic jugs filled with gasoline, at least 10 gallons per jug. We were told that the gas is so much cheaper in Vietnam, that drivers routinely make the trip there, filling up as much as they can carry, then drive it back to Cambodia to sell. Given the (slightly) crazy nature of Cambodian traffic, I for one would not want to be that moto driver.

In Stung Treng, while composing an email in a community Internet center, a development worker could not finish because the generator-powered computer was running out of gas. [...]
