MILLEE - Mobile and Immersive Learning for Literacy in Emerging Economies

The MILLEE research project aims to address illiteracy among underserved communities in developing regions at two levels:

(1) mobile software applications such as educational games for providing an immersive language learning experience on programmable cellphones and other low-cost computing platforms appropriate for Third World conditions, and

(2) local capacity building to facilitate the development of high-quality educational software that address local learning needs in a scalable manner.

Our approach recognizes the constraints that children from the rural areas and urban slums face in accessing educational resources under conventional computing access models, and seeks to promote literacy acquisition in out-of-school contexts, such as when children are helping out in the fields, performing housework or playing with one another.
